On this day in 1976 my homeland shed tears of pain when the Apartheid police massacred protesting students during the youth uprising. On this day 5 years ago I shed tears of pain and sorrow as I lay my mother to an eternal rest.
Today my homeland celebrates this day as Youth Day while they shed tears of their own, those of sorrow as much as those of joy in honour of our nation’s posterity.
In the eye of the storm of turmoil we are wont to believe we will never see the end of the pain, but as time heals those wounds our tears become the involuntary nectar of joy, of growth and of love.

Today, through this song, I shed tears of joy reflecting on the beauty of growth through pain. And so in releasing “Teardrops” I hope to induce tears from you - be they of pain or joy, it is all part of a journey of growth.
